Little Scouts.

Whenever the kiddos get in trouble, the main "punishment" if you may is typically a time out. A small time out usually entails the punished child sitting on the floor and counting to 10 or 20. Samantha counts all the way, and sometimes forgets that she only has to get to 20, and keeps going. We count for Maggie, or well, she counts 1, 2, 3... 1, 2, 3... over and over. Gavin just has to sit on his tooshie for a little while and is told no.

However, a bigger timeout, which usually seems to be given to both girls, means that they are sent to their room, and have to sit in their beds. No toys. Just sitting, until I say they can come out. They're never happy when this happens. Tears are shed. "Mommy is mean!," is screamed. But they calm down.

After a few minutes, a little scout appears. "Mooooooommy?"
Me: "What?" (in a semi gruff voice)

... little scout runs back to room. "Mom's still mad!," is the typical response.

A few minutes later. The other scout appears. "Mommmmmmy?"
Me: "Yes?" (sweeter)
Scout: "Are you happier now?"
Me: "Are you ready to talk about what you did to get a time out?"
Scout runs back to room.... "Ok! Mom's ready to talk!"

Then we discuss what happened. Kisses and hugs are given, and all is right with the world again.

The girls have managed to teach Gavin how to be a scout as well. When they're supposed to be picking up toys, and are instead playing and goofing around, little Gavin will appear, waving, smiling...

... and my response will be one of those plain and simple, good old "mom" looks.

"Buh-bye," he'll say. And off he'll run, back to their room. The last time he was the designated scout, I heard "uh oh," when he returned to the room. A few minutes later, the room was clean.

Here is another example of the way they use their scouting abilities. I was letting Samantha take pictures with my camera. She was having fun, and actually took some great shots, as well as some abstract shots... here are a few of those:

But the greatest picture, is when Samantha was helping Gavin plan an attack on me...

"Mommy, strike a pose!" Meanwhile, Gavin is after me.

Little scouts... I've got three of them.
Watch out!
